FAR Eastern University made sure history didn’t repeat itself.
After blowing a 13-point fourth-quarter lead in their Season 89 opener against Adamson, the Tamaraws found themselves in familiar territory in their Round 2 rematch, watching the Soaring Falcons claw their way back from a 19-point deficit.
But this time, FEU held its ground.
The Tamaraws snapped their three-game skid after surviving that late Falcons onslaught 73-66 on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After a tight opening frame, Kirby Mongcopa spearheaded FEU’s 22-11 second-quarter blitz to build an 11-point cushion at halftime.
FEU stretched its lead to as much as 19, seemingly cruising toward a comfortable victory before Adamson threatened to spoil the party once more.
The Soaring Falcons mounted another fourth-quarter rally, trimming the deficit to single digits and threatening to bring back the ghosts of their first-round encounter.
This time, however, the Tamaraws refused to let the game slip away, keeping Adamson at bay to finally get one back and avoid another late-game collapse.
