UAAP newcomers pass screening; final rosters, schedule out

    Jul 6, 2012
Far Eastern University's rookie American center Anthony Hargrove and National University’s Henri Betayene have been given the go signal to play in the UAAP's 75th season. Jerome Ascano

UAAP president Nilo Ocampo jokingly summed up what transpired during the league board’s scrutiny of player eligibility on Friday in one word: Boring.

Boring is good for the league's new faces and foreign players.

Compared to last season when the eligibility of top stars Bobby Ray Parks of National University and Ateneo’s Greg Slaughter were put in question, this season's batch of newcomers passed the screening with little problems.

Only American rookie Matthew Ball of the University of the Philippines was required to submit additional documents to make him eligible to play in the league's 75th season.

Six other foreigners including Far Eastern University's rookie American center Anthony Hargrove and National University’s Henri Betayene were issued the green light to play this year.

All rosters submitted by their respective teams were also cleared to play by the eligibility committee chaired by Edwin Reyes of La Salle.

James Deans of Adamson and Isaac Lim of Ateneo, who were initially asked to submit additional documents, completed their requirements and got the go-ahead from the committee.

Ball, a product of Canyon High School, is only required to submit a certificate of live birth duly authenticated by the United States consul as well as an alien certificate of registration (ACR).

Ocampo said that Ball’s case is similar to that of University of Santo Tomas big man Karim Abdul. He can still play during the season but UP risks having its won games being forfeited once he fails to submit the additional documents before the end of the first round.

Meanwhile, NU high school rookie Jerome Canaynay was also asked to submit his transcript of records after the committee found discrepancies in his documents.
