FAR Eastern University looks to secure its future in UAAP basketball with a simple present to head coach Nash Racela: an early contract extension.

Amidst the coaching carousel in the UAAP right after Season 78, FEU athletic director Mark Molina said the school is inclined to give the new champion coach an extension even though Racela still has a year left in the contract he signed with the team in 2013.

"FEU will like to extend Nash to a few more years after next year,” said Molina.

FEU initially hired Racela to a two-year contract but school officials decided to amend the agreement after the Tamaraws' impressive first season under the young coach, Molina said.

“The initial contract was two years. Immediately after the first year, we structured it and added two more years so it became four years. So Nash actually has one year left in his contract,” said Molina.

While schools like Ateneo, La Salle, and Adamson hired new high-profile coaches in Gilas Pilipinas coach Tab Baldwin, NCAA champion coach Aldin Ayo, and five-time UAAP champ coach Franz Pumaren, respectively, FEU is determined to keep Racela, putting their trust in the soft-spoken mentor that led the Tamaraws to back-to-back Finals appearances and a championship in just three years in charge.

Molina said FEU surely wants to keep Racela’s system for the long haul as the Tamaraws enter next year without top stars Mac Belo, Mike Tolomia, and Roger Pogoy.

“He has a system that is not dependent on one player,” said Molina, who added that he has yet to officially discuss their plan to Racela. “Siguro, we will enjoy the Christmas vacation first and then, Nash and I will surely talk."
