THE celebrated Nieto twins of Ateneo are proud to have achieved a rare feat in the history of the UAAP juniors basketball after the brothers were both named as part of the Mythical Five of Season 77.
Aside from making the Mythical selection, Mike Nieto was also adjudged tournament MVP for after garnering the highest statistical points at the end of the 14-game elimination round.
Matt said he was glad Mike won the MVP award, aside from the rare fact the two of them made it to the Mythical team.
“’Yung narinig ko na si Mike ang MVP, ako ata ‘yung gumising sa kanya,” said the 17-year-old Matt, who is two minutes younger than Mike. “As a twin brother, sobrang proud ako na si Mike ang MVP.
“Kami ata ‘yung unang magkapatid na nasa Mythical Five kaya sobrang happy na nagawa namin ‘yung history na ‘yun,” said Matt.
Joining the two in the Mythical Five are Mark Dyke of National University, Frederick Tungcab of Adamson, and Aljun Melecio of De La Salle Zobel.
Matt said it’s not the first time he and his brother won an individual award together as they took turns winning the MVP award at times.
“Palit palit lang. Nagkaroon ng time na ako naman ang MVP, si Mike naman ‘yung Mythical. Proud kami na nakakakuha kami ng individual award being together,” he said.
With the individual award already in the bag, the Nieto brothers now focus on reclaiming the championship.
The Blue Eaglets are already seeded in the finals after sweeping all their games in the eliminations.
“Mas dodoblehin pa namin ‘yung effort namin. Ibang level of competition na ito kaya dapat mas doble ang effort namin,” said Matt.
The Blue Eaglets, however, will have to wait as to who their opponents will be as defending champion National University and De La Salle-Zobel will still go against each other for the remaining finals berth.
The Bullpups enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the stepladder semis and will play the Junior Archers on Monday.
Matt said the team is doing its best to stay sharp especially since Ateneo is now on a one-week break.
“We have go get the most out of the break talaga, meaning improving on our skills and develop more cohesiveness as a team para maging one page lang talaga kami,” said Matt.
