MATHEW Montebon has proven in the past that he can take the big shots when Adamson needs him to and make them.
Now, he’s ready to shoulder that bigger responsibility as the Soaring Falcons brace for a tougher grind come UAAP Season 87.
“Obviously, I want to win. That’s the main thing,” he said. “If I have a breakout season, that certainly comes from winning, then I’ll be good.”
Montebon has emerged as the next lead guard for the San Marcelino side following the graduation of Jerom Lastimosa.
But remember, the 6-foot skipper has already filled that role last year when the beloved playmaker was nursing a knee injury.
The Fil-Am guard out of Newark Memorial High School in California topped Adamson in scoring with his 8.47 points on 31-percent shooting from threes and even had the guts to take the biggest shot to save the Soaring Falcons’ season – a game-winning over University of the East which forced Adamson to a fourth-place playoff against Ateneo.

That alone should speak volumes on the confidence that Montebon has on himself, and to an extent, the rest of the team as well, believing that the Soaring Falcons have what it takes to barge into the Final Four this season.
“We don’t really listen to what people say. We have our own expectations,” he said. “I know everyone in Adamson thinks we're good enough to make it to the Final Four and probably more so that's all that matters.”
And if that entails him hitting a few of those game-winners again?
“Hopefully, I could hit a couple more of those.”
