Matthew Aquino wasn't around For NU's game against Ateneo on Sunday.

MATTHEW Aquino of National University has been declared ineligible by the UAAP Board, according to multiple sources.

According to sources, the UAAP board on Saturday ruled Aquino failed to meet the one-year residency for transferees after spending time training in the United States during the school year.

After sitting on the bench in the Bulldogs’ game against University of the East, Aquino did not appear at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum for NU’s match against Ateneo on Sunday.

NU coach Eric Altamirano declined to comment on the controversy, saying he will leave the issue to management although admitted he felt bad about Aquino’s status.

“I feel bad for him because he is a guy who diligently studies. It’s just frustrating,” said Altamirano after Sunday's match.

Altamirano said the young Aquino was called by his father, PBA great Marlou Aquino.

“Pinatawag siya ng tatay niya. I don’t know kung bakit siya pinatawag,” he said.

Altamirano said he will also leave it up to management whether to appeal the UAAP board's decision or not.
