MATT Salem scored a career-high 26 points to lift National University to an 80-69 win over University of the Philippines on Saturday in the UAAP Season 79 basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Rookie JV Gallego and Rev Diputado added 12 points each for the Bulldogs, who improved their win-loss record to 4-2 with their second consecutive victory.

NU led by as many as 13 points but allowed UP to move to within two points, 59-57.

The Bulldogs used an 11-2 run that began with a technical foul on UP’s Andrew Harris to once again take command of the match.

“It was a grind for us,” said NU coach Eric Altamirano. “We expected that.  We knew that UP will be a tough team to play. I reminded them that they are capable of coming back. Unfortunately, we didn’t play good defense in the second half.

“We gave up too many points mostly from turnovers. We didn’t take care of the ball. Good thing other players stepped up,” he added.

Jett Manuel added 21 points for the Maroons, who were dealt their three-game losing skid to fall to 1-6.

    The scores:

    NU 80 — Salem 26, R. Diputado 12, Gallego 12, Alejandro 7, Aroga 7, Mosqueda 5, Pate 5, Salim 4, Morido 2, Aquino 0, C. Diputado 0, Abatayo 0, Rangel 0, Sinclair 0.
