UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas continued to play solid basketball under Aldin Ayo, beating Far Eastern University, 78-70, on Sunday for its third straight win in the UAAP Season 81 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Leading by just one, 55-54, Zach Huang and Germy Mahinay came out with big shots to create separation from the Tamaraws and take a 65-54 lead with 3:55 remaining.
Arvin Tolentino tried to will back the Tamaraws but that ultimately fell short, with the forward’s night ending early anew as he got called for another disqualifying foul in his return from a one-game suspension.
Huang led the Growling Tigers as he finished with a career high 20 points and six rebounds, with 10 of his points coming in the payoff period as UST improved to 4-4 for the season, matching the number of wins that Boy Sablan had in two years.
Marvin Lee finished with 17 points, five assists and two steals, Renzo Suibido had 14 points off the bench as Germy Mahinay had 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Rookie sensation CJ Cansino had a quiet night offensively with just five points but continued to do a yeoman’s job on the boards as he brought down 12 rebounds.
Richard Escoto had 12 points for the Tamaraws as they saw their winning streak snapped at three and dropped to 5-3. Tolentino finished with 11, but got ejected anew for hitting Huang in the face with 15.9 seconds remaining in the game.
