UAAP commissioner Chito Loyzaga is leaving it up to Ateneo officials on whether Blue Eagles coach Bo Perasol will be sanctioned for confronting a De La Salle fan at the end of the tightly-fought contest between the two rival schools on Sunday.
Loyzaga stressed he will not wade into the issue involving Perasol and a supporter of the Green Archers who heckled him on his way to the dugout, triggering the spat that saw the Ateneo coach attempt to charge at the fan in the stands.
“Post-game incident of coach Bo is an issue I will not get involved in. It had nothing to do with the game,” said Loyzaga. “I believe it is the responsibility of the UAAP member school to discipline their teams.”
The commissioner, however, is expected to act on the actions of Perasol when he was called for a technical foul with a minute left in the tightly-fought contest for crossing the court and complaining to the referees.
Perasol said the fan - later identified by news portal Rappler as JJ Atayde - crossed the line when he lashed out at him and the Ateneo team while they were exiting the Smart-Araneta Coliseum playing court on their way to the dugout.
The Ateneo coach was about to charge the La Salle supporter as he tried to cross the barrier at the baseline when venue security and his coaching staff pacified him.
Atayde, a cousin of De La Salle representative to the UAAP board Henry Atayde, already expressed his intentions to apologize to Perasol in the same interview with Rappler.
Atayde admitted having told the Ateneo coach, “Perasol, salamat sa pagpapanalo mo sa amin,” apparently referring to the technical foul on Perasol that led to two late free throws by La Salle star Almond Vosotros.
But Atayde insisted that what he said was nothing personal and was just “fun kantyawan.”
