LOUIE Vigil will no longer be able to suit up for University of Santo Tomas in UAAP Season 79 after a sudden rule change by the collegiate league’s board of trustees to lower the age limit for athletes.
A source said Vigil was supposed to be one of the team's leaders as one of the few holdovers from the Tigers' runner-up team in Season 79. In fact, he has already been part of the team in its preseason preparation, including the Got Skills summer league.
However, a UAAP ruling was made this past week with the league lowering the age limit of its athletes from 25 to 24 — a change that hit Vigil hard.
A person close to Vigil, who will turn 25 during the season, said the rule change is an 'injustice' on the part of the UST player since he was already prepared to suit up for final season with the Tigers, only to be ruled ineligible with just a few months to go before the UAAP.
“Sayang kasi hindi na siya naglaro sa PCBL or sa PBA D-League para lang makalaro sa UST pero biglang hindi na siya eligible,” said the person who refused to be identified.
Vigil averaged 9.3 points for the Tigers last season and was expected to take a major role for the coming year with Kevin Ferrer, Ed Daquiaog, and Karim Abdul, the top three scorers of the squad last year, already ending their college eligibility.
