LA SALLE rookie Jeron Teng prevented University of Santo Tomas from pulling off another escape act, drilling in a buzzer-beating shot to lift the Archers to a 53-51 win on Wednesday in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.
In their first-round encounter, the Tigers came up with a win in double overtime. And just four days ago the UST squad again pulled off a win with a last-gasp basket in extra period against National University.
But Teng would have none of it.
The rookie converted the jumper from the left elbow to lift the Green Archers to the win, their fourth consecutive and sixth victory overall in nine outings that solidified their hold on fourth spot.
UST was threatening again when Karim Abdul's four straight points tied the game with 3.3 seconds left, but the Tigers failed to make a defensive stop against the Archers in their final possession.
“I’m grateful that coach Gee (Abanilla) entrusted me the last shot,” said Teng, who finished with nine points. “Iniisip ko I have to contribute kasi binigay sa akin ’yung last shot."
UST, which was coming off a dramatic 58-57 win over National University last Sunday, dropped to 7-3.
Vosotros also delivered for the Archers with 12 points on four triples. His three-pointer made it a 44-37 game early in the fourth, giving control to a La Salle side that missed point guard LA Revilla and forward Yutien Andrada for the second straight game.
“We are lucky to have survived this game,” said Abanilla. “Almond has a stiff neck but hats off to him. He played his heart out, showed some character as well as the rest of the team.”
