DEFENDING champion La Salle and last year’s runner-up National University claimed their second straight victories, even as Ateneo remained unbeaten to forge a three-way tie for the lead over the weekend in the UAAP Season 77 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Camille Claro and Ana Castillo combined for 16 points as the defending champion Lady Archers bested Adamson, 50-42, while the Lady Bulldogs, behind Trixie Antiquiera’s 15-point showing, nosed out University of Santo Tomas, 62-60.
Last season’s Mythical Team member Danica Jose had a double-double effort of 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Lady Eagles hacked out a 58-55 victory over Far Eastern University.
Ruthlaine Tacula shot 16 points as University of the East barged into the win column with a 58-47 decision against University of the Philippines.
The Lady Warriors moved in a tie with the Lady Tamaraws at 1-1, while the Lady Falcons, Tigresses and Lady Maroons now tote similar 0-2 slates.
The opening of the high school volleyball tournament is set Saturday, according to event host Adamson University.
The competitions in the girls and boys divisions were originally scheduled to open last weekend but were postponed due to the unavailability of Adamson Gym.
Girls action begins with former champion La Salle-Zobel taking on UP Integrated School at 12:30 p.m., while last season’s runner-up NU faces tournament debutant FEU-Diliman at 2 p.m., followed by the Adamson-UE duel at 3:30 p.m.
In boys play, Ateneo and UPIS collide at 8 a.m., while first-time participant FEU-Diliman plays NU at 9:30 a.m., and La Salle-Zobel and UST clash at 11 a.m.
Reigning girls champion UST and boys titleholder UE will begin their campaigns on Sunday.
