DE LA Salle players and coaches got a rare opportunity to meet one of the greatest players in Asian basketball in Shin Dong Pa during their Korea training camp in preparation for Season 81 of the UAAP.
The Green Archers particularly the coaching staff were thrilled to meet the legendary Korean sharp shooter during their tune-up game against Yonsei University where Shin was observing the match.
Prior to the trip in Korea, the Green Archers were in Taiwan for the BLIA Cup where they played against university teams from different parts of the world.
Head coach Louie Gonzalez said they were honored by the presence of Shin, who had legendary battles with the Philippine team during the 1960s and early 70s.
“It truly was an honor. 2008 kasi I was about to assist him during a BCAP (Basketball Coaches Association of the Philippines) coaching clinic sa Philippines pero nag-conflict sa schedule ko,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said Shin had much respect about Philippine basketball that he still remembers the players he had faced before in Robert Jaworski, Atoy Co, Bogs Adornado, Danny Florencio, Francis Arnaiz, Ed Ocampo, and Jimmy Mariano, among others.
He even had photos of the Philippine team, according to Gonzalez.
“We had a talk kanina, up to now he has so much respect for Philippine basketball. He even showed me photos ng mga kalaban nya. Kilala nya pa lahat,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez also took the opportunity to speak with Shin about the Korean basketball culture.
“He watched and observed our game versus Yonsei University. I asked for his presence and his feedback regarding Korea basketball culture, what is behind the discipline and mindset of their philosphy and how they mold their players,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez also opened up the possibility of reviving the Asian University Basketball Challenge that was hosted by the Philippines before. Shin is one of the founders of the tournament.
“I spoke to him as well regarding the revival ng Asian University Basketball Challenge na hino-host natin dati. Siya kasi founder and president nun. Its been a while since meron international collegiate sa atin,” said Gonzalez.
