THE Philippine Under-18 team that has been struggling to lure players from their mother squads in the local school leagues has gotten a boost from Los Angeles.

Kobe Paras is set to suit up for the Philippine team in the Fiba Asia Under-18 Championship after being been given the green light by LA Cathedral high school for the tournament set in Doha from August 19 to 28.

“Pinayagan siya ng coach at ng school niya,” national youth coach Jamike Jarin told Spin.ph on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-6 Paras will arrive in the country on August 1 to join the preparations of the youth team, adding size and athleticism to a lineup that has yet to gain commitments from other top targets.

“Kobe will definitely give us the athleticism and the height. He will be playing multiple positions for the team,” Jarin said.

The 16-year-old Paras will be suiting up for his first full-court appearance for the national team after playing for the 3x3 team in the Fiba-Asia and Fiba World Under-18 tournaments last year.

“Super happy nga kami na kakasama namin siya sa Batang Gilas,” Jarin said.

Paras will not play in the Under-17 World Championship set August 8 to 16 in Dubai because Jarin has already committed the spots to the 12 players that helped the Philippines place second in the Fiba-Asia Under-16 Championship that allowed the country to qualify for the world meet.
