KIEFER Ravena was quick to play down Ateneo's 2-0 start to the UAAP season — even if one of those came at the expense of bitter rival De La Salle.

Ravena finished with 29 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals as he led the Blue Eagles to a 97-86 victory over the reigning titlist Green Archers on Sunday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

However, Ravena, who also went 5-of-7 from three-point range, took the victory in stride, saying the former five-time champions Blue Eagles have not achieved anything this early in the season.

“It’s a good news na natalo namin ang defending champions,” said Ravena. “But it doesn’t say anything. Hindi naman times two kapag tinalo mo defending champion. It’s still 2-0. It’s just 2-0.”

Ravena actually had a slow start after being saddled with two fouls to finish with six points in the first half. But he finally found his range in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points including four three-pointers in that stretch.

“I was able to control myself. Sobrang gigil ko sa umpisa with the two early fouls. But the coaches really calmed me down and told me to let the game come to me.

“Eventually, I hit my shots, my teammates were looking for me. I took the chance to step up in this kind of event,” said the Ateneo star.

Ravena also gave credit to his teammates including Von Pessumal (21 points) and ex-La Salle Green Archer Fonzo Gotladera (17 points, eight rebounds).

“He kept us (in the game) in the first half,” said Ravena, referring to Pessumal. “Von really did a good job. Ito ‘yung hinihintay namin sa kanya. We are really proud of Fonzo.”

“We really stepped up today,” he added.
