THE entire Ateneo team is supporting John Apacible in the aftermath of a controversy that saw him go on a drunken rampage over a traffic altercation, challenging fellow drivers to a fight while flashing a 'Councilor' vanity plate before traffic enforcers on Sunday morning.
Blue Eagles star Kiefer Ravena said the team stands solidly behind the 6-3 sophomore forward, who has since been suspended and barred from attending practices for the second round of the UAAP elimination round.
“Kahit anong mangyari, nasa likod kami n'ya,” Ravena told reporters after Ateneo's win overUniversity of Santo Tomas on Wednesday. “Hindi namin sinasabi na tama ‘yung ginawa niya but as a teammate, you can’t judge someone, ‘yung buong pagkatao niya.”
Ateneo coach Bo Perasol said the team is not condoning Apacible’s actions, but nonetheless said players have decided to dedicate the game to the young player to cheer him up amid the backlash.
“Napag-usapan na lahat. Much has been said about the incident. And we all know and he knows the repercussion for that,” Perasol said during the postgame interview.
“Para sa igaganda ng loob ni John. Because alam naman ni John na mali ‘yung ginawa niya. But as teammates, nandoon kami for him. We want him to be better.”
Ravena described Apacible as a “good kid,” as he expressed confidence that the young player can bounce back from what happened.
“He's a good kid. He makes mistakes. He’s going to learn from it the hard way,” said Ravena.
