KIB Montalbo scored a career-high 18 points as De La Salle won its third straight game in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament, 67-48, at the expense of Adamson Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Montalbo, who only scored a total of 19 points in his rookie season last year, dished out the best performance of his two-year collegiate career since being recruited from Bacolod City.
The former high school star steped up at a time when La Salle was needing a spark in the backcourt as starter Thomas Torres is still out of action due to an ankle injury.
Prince Rivero had 12 points while fellow second stringer Julian Sargent added eight for the Archers, who climbed to fifth place with a 3-2 win-loss card, ahead of University of the East (2-2) in the standings.
La Salle only led 23-18 in the first half before the reigning champions outscored the Falcons, 22-11, in the third quarter. Montalbo scored eight in that span.
“We should have played with more energy in the first half,” said La Salle coach Juno Sauler. “I think the first five, they lacked the energy which I saw in the guys coming off the bench.”
The Falcons lost their fifth successive game, but at least scored more than the record low they posted in a 25-62 loss to National University on Wednesday.
Jansen Rios was the lone double digit scorer for the Falcons with 11 markers.
