INJURED University of the Philippines ace blocker Kathy Bersola admitted she can’t wait to get back to the court, but at the same time said the long wait is actually to her advantage as she continues to recover from injury.
Bersola suffered anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage to her left knee during the Lady Maroons’ UAAP match against Adamson last January 7, ending her season. She has yet to play since.
The change in academic calendar brought about by the K12 education program, forced the UAAP men’s and women’s volleyball tournaments to be moved to February of next year instead of this coming November.
That gave Bersola more time to recover from the injury – which normally takes six to 12 months to heal.
So she is staying patient, no matter how much she misses playing.
“Sobra, no doubt, sobra (miss na maglaro),” said Bersola on Sunday when she watched the game between UP and Ateneo in the Shakey’s V-League Season 12 Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
“(I’m) not yet training. (Pero) sobrang nakatulong na nag-iba ang schedule ng tournament. Pabor, pabor,” she said.
Although she can still feel a little pain when she bends her knee, last year’s UAAP best blocker feels she’s almost ready to play again.
“Pag finull range ko siya (bend na) abot sa dulo, may nafi-feel pa rin ako (na pain), not like pag sa right (knee) kaya ko siya isipa-sipa,” she said.
Bersola shared she can now slowly perform the usual volleyball drills, although she will still seek medical clearance as she aims to get back to full training by middle of September.
“Around 80 percent siguro,” she said. “I can run na, I can jump and I’ve been doing a lot of volleyball drills but kulang pa. Pero naka-set ako mag-take ng clearance test maybe in less than a month from now.”
