CHIANG Kai Shek College standout JV Gallego is leaning toward joining National University in the UAAP.
Gallego said he has not committed to the Bulldogs personally but his parents are already in talks with officials of the school, which won the UAAP Season 77 crown to snap a 60-year title drought.
“I think NU most likely,” said the 5-foot-10 Gallego in an interview on Sunday after a light practice ahead of the National Basketball Training Center All-Star Game at The Arena in San Juan.
“I’m not the one talking to them. My parents are talking to them. I just play my game kung kukunin nila ako,” said Gallego, son of former Mapua Cardinal John Melvin Gallego.
Gallego, 16, is a promising shooting guard who has come up with fine games with the Blue Dragons.
Although not as exposed as other top UAAP and NCAA high school players, Gallego has been making waves for CKSC, winning the Most Outstanding Player plum in last year’s NBTC League after helping the Blue Dragons capture the national crown.
During the championship game, Gallego scored 32 points to lift the Blue Dragons to victory over the Hubert Cani-led NU Bullpups.
Gallego also won the Finals MVP award in the Philippine Chinese Amateur Basketball League last year when the Blue Dragons defeated Far Eastern University-Diliman.
He said he doesn't mind being largely unknown among fans.
“Hindi ko masyadong iniisip ’yun. Kaya naman naming makasabay. Napatunayan na namin ’yun sa MMBL (Metro Manila Basketball League), nakakalaban na namin mga UAAP and NCAA teams. Kung hindi mapansin, it’s okay,” said Gallego.
CKSC has three representatives in the NBTC All-Star game slated March 8 at the Meralco Gym.
Also seeing action in the All-Star Game are Jonas Tibayan and Fran Yu, and Gallego is hoping to make CKSC proud during the showcase event for high school players.
“Sobrang laki at mahalaga ang naitulong ng Chiang Kai Shek sa akin dahil doon ako nakikilala. Susubukan namin na maganda ang maipakita namin dito at ipakita na may maibubuga ang Chiang Kai Shek,” Gallego said.
