JUST three days after setting the UAAP's first triple-double in 12 years, Juan Gomez de Liaño almost equalized that feat with another triple-double performance in University of the Philippines' 95-82 triumph over FEU on Wednesday.
The sophomore guard went an assist shy from another statistical milestone, recording 19 points, 10 rebounds, and nine dimes -- almost nabbing another triple-double had Janjan Jaboneta made the undergoal basket off De Liaño with under three minutes left to play.
But don't look at Gomez de Liaño as someone who actively hunts for those numbers.
"I don’t mind it talaga. We got the W and that’s what matters to me," he said.
Gomez de Liaño said that he didn't really do anything special in these past two games despite those eye-popping numbers, noting, "As soon as coach puts me in, I always play 100 percent and go all-out. There’s no adjustment to it. Whether off the bench or I start, positive energy lang."
It also helped that leaders Paul Desiderio and Bright Akhuetie both had great performances.
Desiderio went bonkers with his 7-of-9 clip from downtown on his way to a career-best 31 points, while Akhuetie remained as a force to be reckoned and almost had a triple-double of his own to the tune of his 20 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists.
"Paul was definitely making his shots, and Bright too. So props to my teammates for making their shots," the 19-year-old cager said.
More than the impressive showing the three had, it's the win that Gomez de Liaño treasures the most with UP resuscitating its Final Four hopes this UAAP Season 81 as it's now tied at fourth place with FEU at 5-5.
"This win was very important. Right now, di ba same standing kami? So this was big for us," he said.
