UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas turned to its long range arsenal to finally end a three-game skid in the UAAP Season 81 as it blasted University of the East, 80-66, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
After connecting on just 12 from downtown in their previous games combined, the Growling Tigers made 16 triples in the game to send the Red Warriors crashing back to earth.
The Growling Tigers took a 21-point lead early in the third before Alvin Pasaol led a Red Warriors fightback, trimming the deficit to just seven.
That’s when the Tigers turned to their three-point bombs anew, with Joshua Marcos hitting two threes, with CJ Cansino and Renzo Suubido also draining one apiece to take the breezy win.
Subido finished with 22 points, making five of his 10 three pointers, to lead the Tigers to their second win against four losses.
Rookie Cansino, meanwhile, bounced back from a dismal performance in their loss to La Salle as he finished with 17 points, 17 rebounds, four assists and a block in easily the most impressive performance in his young career.
“Pinaghandaan talaga namin ‘to, sobrang down namin the past two games. Hindi namin alam kung ano yung kulang kung bakit sa practice ang ganda sobra, pero sa game hindi namin madala,” said Cansino.
“So I’m happy na nadala na namin finally,” he added.
Alvin Pasaol was the lone bright spot for the Red Warriors as he finished with 32 points, 15 rebounds and three steals.
Coming off a 25-point rout of the FEU Tamaraws, the Red Warriors looked far from that fiery squad and slipped to 1-5.
The Red Warriors made only 19 of 65 attempts while shooting three for 21 from downtown.
