PLAY college basketball or become a seaman.

Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu guard Joseph Daniel Mayol admitted being torn on what to pursue between his two dreams shortly after being named as part of the Mythical Five of the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) High School Championship over the weekend.

The 16-year-old Mayol earned a place in the elite selection alongside Magis Eagles teammate Joshua Sinclair, San Beda’s Andrei Caracut, National University’s Mark Dyke, and JV Gallego of Chiang Kai Shek.

He was hoping the individual award and Sacred Heart School’s successful title conquest would pave the way for him to realize his dream of playing college basketball in a reputed college or university.

But at the same time, he bared to Spin.ph that he also wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father.

“Gusto ko maglaro ng basketball sa college, pero gusto ko rin maging seaman,” said Mayol, adding it was only natural for him to follow the same the career path of his father.

“Nung bata ako, ‘yun talaga ‘yung pangarap ko sa paglaki ko para may maganda akong trabaho, bago ‘yung basketball," said the native of Mandaue City.

Yet, Mayol likewise stressed he wants to play college basketball, although no school has yet to recruit him.

“Gusto ko rin po mag-basketball kaya pinag-iisipan ko po kung magsi-seaman ako o basketball pa rin. Pangarap ko rin po maglaro ng basketball sa college,” he added.

Mayol and the rest of the Magis Eagles beat multi-titled San Beda Red Cubs, 82-78, to win the NBTC title in a game that saw him fire four three-pointers, putting a fitting end to Mayol’s high school career.

Mayol credited the title victory to the Magis Eagles’ teamwork.

“Maganda ‘yung pinakita namin sa offense at defense. Sabi kasi ni coach, teamwork is the best. We share the ball because we believe in the saying that if we fail as a team, we fail as individuals. ‘Yun po ‘yung motto namin,” Mayol said.

After winning the championship, Mayol is now looking forward to graduation day, an event his father will personally attend.

“Hindi po siya sumakay ngayon dahil hinihintay niya ‘yung graduation ko at 'nung little sister ko,” Mayol said with a smile.
