FORMER Ateneo juniors coach Joe Silva said he is deep in talks with University of the East management about the possibility of taking over the head coaching job of the Red Warriors.
Silva confirmed UE management has already offered the vacant post to him in talks with no less than Lucio 'Bong' Tan Jr. and his basketball operations chief Lawrence Chongson.
Silva, however, said he has yet to accept the offer.
“Not yet. Haven’t said yes,” said Silva.
Tiebreaker Times reported Silva is set to take over the UE coaching job vacated by Derrick Pumaren.
If he accepts the job, Silva will be coaching in the college level for the first time after leading the Blue Eaglets to two UAAP juniors championships. They won the Season 80 title with the loss of just one game.
Silva later stepped down and was replaced by Reggie Varilla.
Chongson told SPIN.ph last week that former KIA coach and current Valenzuela Classic mentor Chris Gavina is no longer being considered for the UE head-coaching job.
“Sa radar ko, hindi na si Chris Gavina” said Chongson. “Ako ‘yung kumontak sa kanya. Pero that was the time na he was the coach of Valenzuela. I was forced to look elsewhere.”
Chongson also said he had already spoken to a person who he believed is the right person to handle the team.
“May kausap ako, convinced ako na he is the right man for the job,” said Chongson, without revealing names. ”Hopefully, ma-presenta ko na siya sa management.”
Chongson said he has been recently appointed by Tan to help out in the basketball program of UE.
“Isang bago kong assignment right now is tumutok sa UE. I’m in the process of looking for coaches. May mga pinursue ang management. Hindi nag-work. We are taking our time to make the right choice. Binigay sa akin ni boss ‘yung assignment na ‘yan,” said Chongson.
“Kailangan pa namin pag-usapan kung ano pang mga hakbang. Ang mission order ko ngayon, maglatag ng programa, maglagay ng personnel, at kumuha ng recruit. Kailangan ng proseso. Kailangan baguhin ‘yung programa,” said Chongson.
