JJAY Alejandro is getting inspiration from Kiefer Ravena in leading National University's last-ditch push for the Final Four.
Alejandro bared he received a text message from Ravena early in the second round after an NU win over University of the East in UAAP Season 80.
The NU shooting guard said the text message came as a surprise for him, but was happy to get support from the incoming PBA cager.
“After ng game against UE, second round, chineck ko phone ko, nakita ko, ‘Jay, Manong ‘to.’ So alam ko na si Kiefer ‘yun kasi Manong tawag ko sa kanya,” said the 22-year-old Alejandro, who bared that Ravena regularly texted him whenever he played below par.
“Si Manong Kiefer played for coach Jamike. Kapag hindi ako nakaka-double figures o mababa sa 20 points ‘yung na-score ko, lagi akong nakaka-receive ng text kay Kiefer. Tinatanong ko kung ano dapat gawin sa certain situations,” he added.
With NU still in the race for the last semis spot, Alejandro is flattered to receive pointers from his idol who inspires him to be a better leader for the Bulldogs.
“Basically, ang sinabi niya, kailangan sa akin manggaling offensively at defensively. Pakita ko sa mga teammates ko. Sabi ko, thank you ah,” he said.
“Flattered siyempre. Idol ko ‘yun, Kiefer Ravena. Sobrang inspired na nanggaling sa kanya ‘yung tinuturo niya, coming from his experience,” added Alejandro.
On Wednesday, the 6-foot Alejandro tore a page off Ravena’s playbook as he kept his team in the Final Four chase by contributing 17 points, six rebounds, and nine assists in NU’s 87-84 win over Far Eastern University.
Alejandro also came up big in a late NU run, hitting a triple to give the Bulldogs an 82-81 lead. He went on to score 11 points in the fourth.
The right decision-making down the stretch is one of the aspects that Ravena emphasized, according to Alejandro.
“I think ‘yung decision-making sa fourth quarter kasi ‘yung teammates ko, nagra-run na sila eh. Wala kaming ibang gawin kundi bumawi. We made stops and I made the right plays. Pinapasahan ko sila Issa (Gaye), Enzo (Joson), naco-convert naman,” said Alejandro.
