JESON Delfinado hit crucial baskets in the final minute and Far Eastern University overcame the Philippine Under-17 men’s national team, 69-66, on Sunday in the 20th Fr. Martin Summer Cup at the San Beda Gym.
The second-year cager Delfinado scored only nine points, but made the most important baskets in the endgame to help the Tamaraws defeat the world championship-bound Nationals.
Delfinado hit a jumper with 54.5 seconds to put the Tamaraws ahead, 67-66, and made a free throw to settle the final score.
FEU rookie Richard Escoto scored on a free throw for the Under-17 team with 1:04 left to pull the Nationals ahead, 66-65, but failed to launch a shot in the final minute.
Francis Tamsi, a recruit from Bohol, topscored for the Tamaraws with 17 points to lift the team to their first win in Group B.
Michael Dela Cruz and Matt Nieto each had 11 points for the Under-17 team, which is seeing action in the tournament as part of its preparations for the Fiba Under-17 World Championship in Dubai this August.
Joseph Gabayni had 14 points as Lyceum-B defeated Centro Escolar University-Malolos, 87-52.
In juniors action, National University defeated Chiang Kai Shek College, 85-56, while Adamson defeated Manila Patriotic School, 120-59.
The Bullpups and the Baby Falcons hold 2-0 win-loss cards.
