COACH Aldin Ayo, out of the La Salle game against Ateneo as he serves suspension, confirmed Jeron Teng will sit out the Archers-Eagles match on Sunday due to injury.
Teng has a left ankle injury and patellar tendonitis, also known as a jumper’s knee. The extent of the injuries have yet to be determined but Ayo allayed fears of a serious injury.
“’Yung wear and tear na ’yun especially ’yung tendonitis. Lahat naman nagkakaroon nun,” said Ayo.
Ayo said the injury explained why Teng didn’t get the usual playing time especially in the endgame against University of the East where he scored seven points.
“May mga nararamdaman na ’yun. Hindi siya 100 percent,” said Ayo.
Teng is averaging 16.3 points and 3.5 rebounds for the Green Archers in Season 79.
Ayo, however, expressed confidence that the rest of the Archers will step in the 4 p.m. match against the Eagles at the MOA Arena.
“Everybody can step up naman. Lagi ko sinasabi na the 15 guys are capable of playing. Kung may hindi makakapaglaro, somebody is going to step up. Someone is going to replace his spot,” Ayo said.
Ayo will also miss the match after a one-game suspension following his ejection from the game against UE. Assistant coach Louie Gonzales is expected to take the lead role for La Salle’s match against Ateneo.
Ayo said the system that La Salle has employed under his watch will be tested against Ateneo.
“When I proposed the system, I told them that nobody is above the system even me. As long as the system is working, kung established na ang system, walang problema. Tomorrow, we can see and check if they have already absorbed the system,” Ayo said.
Ayo is seeing a different Ateneo team from the preseason, and the Blue Eagles enter the match confident and on a two-game winning streak.
“They have improved a lot compared nung linaro namin sila sa Filoil. They are doing the same things, the difference is mas tumigas sila. It’s a different Ateneo team,” Ayo said.
