ALVIN Teng said his son Jeron’s appearance in Bench’s 'Naked Truth' fashion show over the weekend shouldn’t be blamed for his below-par game in La Salle's playoff loss to the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Sunday.

“Pag rampa niya dun (Naked Truth), isang ikot lang naman iyun, saka siyempre, naka-commit na siya dun last year pa lang kaya matagal nang naka-schedule iyan,” the elder Teng told Spin.ph on Monday.

Jeron, along with elder brother Jeric and La Salle teammate Arnold Van Opstal joined the Bench denim and underwear show which was pushed a day back to Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena due to typhoon Mario.

The following day, the 6-3 Teng, the Green Archers’ leading scorer this season, was limited to just eight points on 2-of-11 shooting. He did add eight rebounds, but committed five turnovers in La Salle’s 60-65 loss to Far Eastern University in their UAAP semifinal playoff on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The defeat allowed the Tamaraws to clinch the No. 2 seeding and the twice-to-beat advantage that goes with it. On the other hand, the Green Archers, who were relegated to third seeds, face a must-win situation this Saturday against the Tamaraws.

Despite the poor performance, Alvin Teng said basketball fans should even laud his son for making the effort to play, considering that Jeron was also coming off a bout with mild dengue recently.

“Mga three days and two nights siya saka si Jeric sa ospital, kaya siyempre, medyo wala lang siya sa timing,” said the elder Teng, who was then considered one of the pro league’s premiere defenders during his time.

“Eh di naman biro na magka-dengue ka, pero pukpok naman siya sa game kaya sabi ko sa kanya, nandiyan na iyan, huwag na lang niya intindihin sinasabi ng iba, focus na lang siya sa preparation.”

With at least five days to prepare for Saturday’s win-or-go-home match, Alvin expects his son to get his rhythm back and help La Salle defend its title against FEU.

“Mahaba pa ang preparasyon, saka di pa tapos ang laban,” he added.
