NEW La Salle head coach Jermaine Byrd is already buckling down to work.
The American mentor was in attendance for the UAAP Season 81 juniors' basketball games at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan, a curious observer when the Kai Sotto-led Ateneo beat cellar-dweller UE, 82-59, on Wednesday.
Byrd, who was with Green Archers assistant coach Danny Seigle and De La Salle Zobel deputy Gian Nazario, politely declined granting interviews to reporters as he opted to wait for the official announcement from the school.
However, sources close to the situation bared that Byrd has already started working out with the team last week as La Salle begins its early preparations for UAAP Season 82 in September.
A former assistant coach for NBA G-League teams Tulsa 66ers, Sioux Falls Skyforce, and the LA D-Fenders, Byrd is no stranger calling the shots in Asia as he previously worked as a player development coach with Samsung Blue Minx and the Seoul Samsung Thunders in the Korean Basketball League (KBL).
He replaced Louie Gonzalez at the helm after the Green Archers failed to reach the Final Four last season.
