JEFF Napa said he is focused on his role as Letran head coach, and made it clear he is still very much part of National University despite the shakeup in the coaching ranks of its juniors basketball team.
Recently, the Bullpups made a coaching change when they hired Goldwin Monteverde as head coach of the three-time UAAP champion squad.
Napa, however, said he remains with NU's juniors and the seniors team in a different capacity, although he declined to go into detail.
In fact, Napa was even at the bench when NU went up against Diliman College in the opener of the UCBL Summer Invitational on Thursday.
Even though he still holds a position with NU, Napa said he is very much focused on his coaching job with Letran, which opens its Filoil campaign on Friday as part of their preparations for the NCAA.
“I’m still with NU but my focus is with Letran,” said Napa, without elaborating.
Under his watch, Napa, who played for the Bulldogs during his heyday, led the Bullpups to three UAAP titles in Season 74, 76, and 78. He also helped NU reached the finals last season, but lost to Far Eastern University.
Even with the coaching change, Napa's assistants Chico Manabat, Leo Pujante, and Jake Agleron are still part of NU under new Bullpups coach Monteverde.
As for Letran, Napa said he has already set goals and targets for the Knights as they progress into the NCAA Season 93, his second season as the head coach of the Knights.
Napa also welcomes the return of Rey Nambatac and Bong Quinto, who had stints in the PBA D-League during the offseason.
“Gusto naming ma-achieve ‘yung mag-improve kami every game especially wala kaming import. Masanay kami na naglalaro ng sama sama kami. I’m sure ‘yung mga players ko, magbibigay ng best nila lalo na’t bumalik si Rey at Bong,” said Napa.
