As the veteran of the University of the Philippines, JD Cagulangan understands the weight of responsibility that comes with being the captain of the Fighting Maroons.
Even though many view the Diliman side as a championship contender early in the preseason, Cagulangan is quick to acknowledge that there is still a long journey ahead before they can reclaim the top spot.
“Laging sinasabi sa amin ng coaches namin na kung ano yung gusto namin para sa team namin, yung culture na bini-build namin, yun lang ang gawin lang namin,” he said.
Now serving as the top senior for UP without Malick Diouf and CJ Cansino, Cagulangan recognizes the importance of setting the right example for his teammates to follow.
Fortunately for the Iskos, the 5-foot-9 playmaker rose to the occasion, delivering 19 points, three assists, and three steals in UP’s 89-77 victory over La Salle on opening day of the Filoil EcoOil 17th ECJ Preseason Cup last Saturday.
Vengeful Maroons
Cagulangan's stellar performance showcased his composure under pressure and helped the Fighting Maroons exact revenge against the reigning UAAP champion.
However, Cagulangan's focus extends beyond his own achievements, as he is pleased with the performance of the rest of the squad, particularly this new-look Fighting Maroons team against the Green Archers.
“Nag-respond naman ng maayos yung team,” he said. “Happy ako na hindi pa rin kuntento kasi malayo pa ang season namin. For sure, marami pa kaming matututunan.”
While the early results are promising, Cagulangan knows there is still room for improvement, both offensively and defensively. Nevertheless, he is optimistic about UP's trajectory and hopes they can carry their momentum throughout the season.
“Di na rin siya ganoon kalayo sa gusto namin, pero papunta na kami sa gusto naming mangyari. Pero sabi ko nga, marami pa ring room to improve on both offense and defense. Sana magtuloy-tuloy lang yung ginagawa namin para madala namin this season.”
Spoken like a true veteran.
