JAN Macasaet is making his presence for University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Season 79 felt after missing last season, and he has the Tigers trainer and new coach to thank.

Scratched last season after getting injured while lifting weights, Macasaet has done well so far in the Tigers’ first two games in Season 79 of the UAAP.

The 6-foot-3 Macasaet averaged a near double-double of 10 points and 9.5 rebounds in two games in his third year with the squad.

“Last season, nadisgrasya sa pagwe-weights,” said Macasaet without elaborating. “Hindi ako na-lineup last season.”

Now Macasaet is stepping up especially since UST needs muscle in the paint following the graduation of Karim Abdul.

Macasaet scored 12 points and had nine rebounds in UST’s loss to Ateneo, and the former San Sebastian Staglet again flirted with a double-double when he contributed eight points and 10 rebounds in a win over University of the East.

“Siguro sa kumpiyansa na binibigay ni coach at sa mga teammates ko,” said the 22-year-old Macasaet, when asked about his effort so far this year. “Binibigyan ako ng kumpiyansa na laruin ‘yung role ko.”

The UST big man admitted it was a challenge for him in his first few seasons with the Tigers due to a heavy frontcourt, but knew that his time will come.

“May Karim Abdul, lahat nandoon, sila Aljun Mariano, Paulo Pe. Iniisip ko na darating ang time ko. Tiwala lang kay God na natulungan ako. Nagsisipag lang talaga ako,” said Macasaet.

After getting back to top form with the help of the Tigers trainer, Macasaet got a new role under a new coach.

“Salamat kay coach Boy (Sablan) at kay coach John Aquino, ‘yung strength and conditioning coach namin. Siya ‘yung tumulong sa akin para palakasin at maging kundisyon kami,” he said.
