NATIONAL University graduating swingman Jake Figueroa didn’t look defeated when he walked out of the dugout for the last time.
Tired, yes. Heartbroken, absolutely. But defeated? Never.
There’s a certain kind of pain that only the best players in college basketball ever get to feel - the kind that comes when they're good enough to get the spotlight, close enough to touch the trophy, but still come up short when it matters most.
Figueroa lived that feeling twice in his final year in the UAAP - falling short on winning the MVP and entering the Finals.

Two races, two heartbreaks, both within reach, both slipping away.
And in the end, the Kapampangan forward left empty-handed.
They were supposed to break the drought and this was the year.

The Bulldogs finished the elimination round as top seed with 11-3 record, carried a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis and they believed that this was finally the season they could end an 11-year wait for the title.
The path was there. The momentum was there. The dreams were there. But even favorites fall, sometimes.
They led the standings, led the storylines, led the conversations until they didn’t. The season ended with no Finals, just that familiar ache of what might have been.
“Medyo emotional pero yun nga every year is a different story,” said Figueroa.
“Wala namang regret, binigay namin yung 100 percent,” he added.
Inside the locker room, the seniors sat quietly. Season over. Futures uncertain. And Figueroa, the emotional core of this NU team, knew he had just played his last UAAP game.
“Sobrang blessed ko din na NU ako. Sobrang ganda ng journey namin,” he stressed after finishing with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one block.
For five years, that journey was built around the same blueprint - compete hard, compete together, and compete without excuses.
He never chased the numbers. But they always came anyway as was supposed to win MVP and lead NU back to the Finals.
Those were the narratives written for him. Instead, the season ended with neither.
“Wala naman sa akin yung award,” he said softly. “Team talaga yung number one sa amin.”
But make no mistake - the sting was real. When you give everything, and still falling short of achieving, the silence carries weight.
They were top seed, had the twice-to-beat, and were favorites.
And yet, they still fell short.
“Kami mga seniors, sobrang ganda ng journey. I-checherish nila yun.”
NO REGRETS
One moment could have changed everything. One possession. One decision.
But the hamstring tightened. less than a minute left. Season slipping.
“Walang regrets. Sakit talaga ng hamstring ko,” he said. “Di natin inaasahan.”
In a career full of clutch finishes, this time, the ball wasn’t his. Maybe that was the final lesson - even superstars are human.
What he carries out of NU, though, isn’t frustration, but evolution.
“Leadership. Maturity,” he said, repeating what Coach Jeff drilled into him for years.
“Ever since, sinasabi sa amin maturity talaga.”
WHAT COMES NEXT?
His answer was honest, simple, and very 'Jake.'
“Wala pa. Gusto muna mag-relax. Marami pa akong kulang as a player.”
And yet, wherever he goes, NU will stay with him.
“Father figure talaga si Coach Jeff,” he said. “Sobrang blessed ko siya yung humawak sa akin.”
There was no confetti. No Finals. No MVP medal. Just the walk back to the dugout, and the quiet realization that college basketball was over.
“Siyempre, sobrang sakit,” he said. “Pero wala na kami magagawan. Nangyari na. Pupunta na kami sa totoong buhay.”
He leaves without hardware, but not without legacy. He leaves empty-handed, but not empty.
Because sometimes, the story isn’t found in celebrations. Sometimes, it’s in the heartbreak.
Sometimes, it’s in being good enough to believe - and brave enough to chase it anyway.
And sometimes, falling short is the very thing that makes a career whole.
