Ice Blanco-Hontiveros bares choice came down to La Salle and Ateneo

Chalk this one up to La Salle
    Aug 22, 2020

PROMISING Cebuano guard Isaiah “Ice” Blanco-Hontiveros said the chance to go back to a place he once called home was just too good to pass up on.

The son of former PBA and Gilas Pilipinas standout Dondon Hontiveros said that there was more to his decision to commit to the La Salle Green Archers than just basketball.

“Obviously naman, it’s a prestigious school but there’s more to it than basketball for me,” said the 6-foot-3 left-handed guard, who led the University of Cebu Junior Webmasters to a title in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) in 2018 before falling short in 2019.

He was also named to the Mythical Five in the juniors division last season.

“What really led me there was the fact that I was once a Lasallian, and it was nice to be given an opportunity to become one again,” added Hontiveros who spent Grades Six through 10 at La Salle Greenhills.

Hontiveros is aware that he will be joining a loaded backcourt that already has Aljun Melecio and another promising guard in Evan Nelle, who transferred from San Beda. However, Hontiveros said he is confident he will be able to earn his spot and make his mark.

“I for sure know that it would be a challenge but I also have confidence in myself that I would be able to overcome any situation," said Hontiveros. "I owe it to UC and my family for really pushing me to my limits and making me a better player and person."

However, after carefully weighing the pros and cons of each school and their respective basketball programs, the youngster finally decided on going to Taft.

Ice shared that his father was actually more excited in the entire process and played a crucial role in helping him come to the decision.

“He played a big part, he was really considering and analyzing all the opportunities. I think he was more excited than me about this whole college thing to be honest,” said Hontiveros.

Ice made it clear his former PBA star dad never attempted to dictate on him.

“I’d like to thank him for the many advice that he gave me. It's cool that he never really pressured me about a specific school, he just listened to what I had to say, gave me advice and supported my decision,” added Hontiveros of his father.
