HIS transfer to Far Eastern University has given Hubert Cani a new lease on life as he looks to regain his confidence after a disappointing season with Ateneo in the UAAP men's basketball tournament.
Cani has recently transferred to FEU from Ateneo, where he failed to make a mark in his only season with the Blue Eagles before leaving the team after failing to make the academic requirements for a student-athlete.
But the former National University juniors standout said he is thankful to FEU coaches, especially head coach Nash Racela, for giving him a fresh start and a chance to regain his form with the school's Team B roster.
“Pinapabayaan lang ako maglaro, binibigyan po kami ng kumpiyansa kasi alam naman po natin ‘yung nangyari kaya binibigyan kami ng confidence,” said Cani on Thursday when he watched FEU play La Salle in a tune-up game at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
FEU has been keeping busy playing in the Got Skills and Fr. Martin Cup, where Cani as well as fellow transferee Arvin Tolentino have been strutting their wares as they undergo residency before being eligible for Season 80 in 2017.
Cani admitted Racela was instrumental in his transfer to the Tamaraws, adding that the mentor expressed confidence in them that they can be major pieces in the Tamaraws' future squad.
“Siya po talaga ‘yung kumausap sa amin ni Arvin. Ibabalik niya ‘yung kumpiyansa namin at ‘yung tiwala,” said Cani.
Cani said he has been playing well for the Tamaraws in his two offseason tournaments with the squad.
“Tutok sa amin ‘yung mga coaches. ‘Yung mga training namin, nakakapag-adjust naman kami agad. Mabilis ‘yung adjustment namin,” Cani said.
Meanwhile, patience is a virtue for the former high school star.
“Wala naman po akong magagawa. Okay lang po talaga maghintay ng one year,” said Cani.
As for the UAAP squad for Season 79, Cani said he feels FEU is close to being at par with La Salle, seen as the top title contender for the coming campaign.
“Nawala po ‘yung mga veterans kaya malaking adjustment sa kanila dahil mga bata sila. Siyempre, ine-expect talaga ang La Salle kaya ‘yun po ‘yung pinapantayan nila,” said Cani.
