RENZO Subido has just obtained a release from De La Salle, allowing last year’s UAAP high school top scorer to suit up for University of Santo Tomas as early as the coming Season 77 of the league.

A source by Spin.ph said Subido was given his release, with no less than De La Salle Zobel president Br. Bernie Oca signing the papers.

Subido is actually covered by the controversial residency rule that requires an incoming freshman who transferred from one UAAP school to another to sit out for two seasons before becoming eligible to play.

But a clause in the rule allows freshmen to play right away so long as they obtain a release paper from their previous schools.

Subido qualifies under the clause.

The case of the high-scoring guard is one of the rare instances in the league where a first-year player was able to obtain a release from his former school and avoid having to undergo a two-year residency before being allowed to play.

Controversial Jerie Pingoy, the first high-profile athlete to be affected by the contentious rule, is now entering the second and final year of his residency with Ateneo after failing to obtain a release from his alma mater Far Eastern University.

The development comes as a big boost for the Tigers in their efforts to reinforce their backcourt. UST has not had a natural point guard since Jeric Fortuna left the team after the 2012 season.

Initially, Subido’s family had indicated their son will be staying with La Salle and have shelved plans of moving over to UST.

But Subido apparently had another change of heart after having already attended UST practices even during the time when Pido Jarencio was still head coach of the Tigers.

The Zobel point guard averaged 20.1 points per game during his stint with the Junior Archers in Season 76 and topped the rest of the league in three-point conversions with 30.
