ADAMSON greats Hector Calma and Kenneth Duremdes will grace the opening of the 76th season of the UAAP on June 29 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
UAAP secretary treasurer Malou Isip said the appearance of Calma and Duremdes will be one of the highlights of the elaborate opening ceremonies they are preparing as hosts of the season.
“Spectacular ang aming opening,” said Isip in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum held in Shakey’s Malate Branch “But it will be a surprise.”
Calma led the Falcons to their only seniors title in 1978 and went on to become one of the top guards in the PBA with Northern Consolidated and San Miguel Beer.
Duremdes, meanwhile, had a stellar career with Adamson in the 1990s and won the PBA MVP award with Alaska in 1998.
Adamson president Fr. Gregg Banaga will usher in the new season with a theme “Greatness Never Ends” right before a men’s basketball doubleheader.
Far Eastern University and University of the East open the season at 2 p.m. before De La Salle faces University of Santo Tomas at 4 o’clock.
Adamson aims to surpass the success of last season, which saw an increase in gate attendance not just in basketball but also in volleyball.
"We want to achieve the success of Season 75. We will try to surpass it in terms of gate attendance for this season. Every year, students are looking forward to the UAAP," said Isip.
Head coach Leo Austria, meanwhile, is hoping that his basketball team will finish creditably although he said it won’t be easy.
“This season will be exciting,” said Austria, who recently led the San Miguel Beermen to the Asean Basketball League crown. “It's a wide-open race. Any team can beat any team. It's the UAAP, anything can happen.”
The Falcons will face University of the Philippines on July 30 at the Mall of Asia before five-time defending champion Ateneo battles National University.
For this season, poomsae has also been added as a regular event in taekwondo.
The volleyball tournament will start in November.
