GERRY Esplana and Bobby Jose are set to be introduced as new assistant coaches of University of Santo Tomas' team in the UAAP, sources told SPIN.ph on Monday.
Sources said the team has already been informed about Esplana's appointment last Sunday. Jose's return to a school he represented in the UAAP in the 80s will be announced in a team meeting to be led by head coach Boy Sablan on Monday, the sources added.
Esplana is a former star of Far Eastern University but has had coaching experience at Emilio Aguinaldo College in the NCAA before being replaced by Andy De Guzman two years ago.
Jose, meantime, played for UST in the 80s with the late Gido Babilonia and Rabbi Tomacruz, who is currently part of the Growling Tigers coaching staff.
Contacted for comment, Sablan said Esplana and Jose have expressed support to him, but clarified the two will not hold any official position in the team.
Sablan said Esplana and Jose are both his friends.
"Hindi po," said Sablan, when asked if Esplana and Jose are now part of the UST coaching staff. "Mga friends ko sila na nagpakita lang ng support sa akin."
The UST basketball team is currently in turmoil following accusations made by Embons Bonleon of a 'play-for-pay' system under Sablan's watch.
Sablan has denied Bonleon's claims.
The team has also denied reports of a player upheaval after an alleged dugout outburst by Sablan following a loss in a preseason tournament last week.
