FOR the second game in a row, Wendell Comboy has won games for Far Eastern University on the defensive end – and with one of the greatest defensive guards to ever play in the PBA right on their bench, it’s no surprise why.
Putting the teachings of assistant Johnny Abarrientos to mind, Comboy came away with a match-saving block on Sean Manganti with less than 10 seconds to play in the game as the Tamaraws put a dent on the Adamson Falcons’ immaculate record in the UAAP Season 81, 88-85, on Sunday.
“Bonus nalang yung block, ang laging sinasabi sakin ni coach Johnny, talagang force to miss – hindi mismong block, just force to miss lang,” said Comboy who finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots in the game.
“Not to the point na late ka chachallenge, not to the point na maffoul mo siya. Gulat nalang ako naabot ko yung bola, lalo na si Sean Manganti pa yun diba,” he added.
Comboy said that having a five-time PBA All Defensive Team member and the steals leader of the league is definitely a luxury that they’re taking advantage of.
The fourth-year guard said that the former Alaska great has always been on their ears, being on top of their individual game.
“Very remindful siya sa bawat isa sa amin, sa individual skills namin, sa mga diskadiskarte, tapos andyan naman sila coach Olsen when it comes to team,” he added.
It was the second straight that Comboy shone defensively as he’s just come off a terrific defensive stand against Dave Ildefonso and National University.
Comboy limited the rookie sensation to just 11 points after requesting coach Olsen Racela to assign him as Ildefonso’s primary defender.
This time around, he didn’t have to ask.
“Di na ako lumapit kay coach, siya na mismo lumapit sakin na ‘Wendell assign kita kay Ahanmisi, pwede ka rin mapunta kay Sean Manganti’ so ready lang ako,” said Comboy.
And he wasn’t that bad defensively against the two.
Though Ahanmisi and Manganti still got to 21 and 20 points respectively, the pair had to work for their numbers as the Tamaraws, led by Comboy’s defensive brilliance, forced them to tough shots.
Ahanmisi made just 7 of his 18 attempts while Manganti missed 17 of his 24 shots in the game.
Talk about having a field day defensively.
“Sa simula’t sapul yun naman talaga ako, sa offense di ko na ineexpect yan dumadating nalang talaga. Pero yung nagbibigay sakin ng playing time, sabi nga ni coach O (Olsen Racela), yung depensa. Dumepensa muna ako tyaka nalang dadating ang opensa ko. Bonus nalang yun.”
