Future bright for Ateneo as Eagles win Fr. Martin Division II crown

ATENEO defeated San Beda, 68-51, to capture the Fr. Martin Division II Cup title at the Trinity University of Asia Gym in Quezon City on Saturday.

The Ateneo roster was consisted by its Team B pool that includes prized recruits Jerie Pingoy and Fonzo Gotladera.

But more importantly, the win was a big testament to the Blue Eagles’ future after failing to make the UAAP men’s Final Four this season after winning five straight championships from 2008 to 2012.

It was the first title for both Pingoy and Gotladera since transferring to the Katipunan-based school earlier this year.

Pingoy, a two-time UAAP juniors MVP, is redshirting for two years following his controversial move from Far Eastern University-Diliman in high school to Ateneo – a huge development that led to sweeping changes in the league’s residency rules.

Gotladera, on the other hand, is also taking up residency after suiting up for De La Salle in previous seasons.

The Ateneo-B squad earned a trip to the Division II Cup finals following a 78-75 victory over National University in the semifinals.

UE won last year’s Division II crown behind Charles Mammie and Gino Jumao-as.

The Red Warriors went on to win the preseason crown, but failed to make it to the Final Four of Season 76.
