MIKE Tolomia sank a late three-pointer to rescue Far Eastern University in the face of a big scare from winless Adamson, 64-60, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 78 men’s basketball tournament.
Tolomia’s three-pointer with 41.8 seconds left eased the pressure on the Tamaraws, 60-58, in a game that was too close to call all the way to the end at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With the great escape, FEU claimed the solo lead with a 5-1 win-loss card but not after enduring some scary moments from Adamson.
The Falcons went on an 11-0 run in the third quarter to seize a 41-36 lead. In the fourth period, Papi Sarr scored a three-point play that gave the Falcons a 56-50 advantage with 5:43 left in the game.
Joseph Nalos also converted a lay-up against fellow Cebuano Monbert Arong, 58-57, with 49 seconds to play in the fourth before Tolomia’s triple.
“Inconsistent pa rin,” said FEU coach Nash Racela at the end of a tough stretch where the Tamaraws played three games in one week.
“Going to this week, we expected a hard three games. Every single game that we played was really had. Muntikan pa kami,” said Racela.
Russell Escoto had 11 points, while Tolomia and Mac Belo had 10 points each for FEU. Belo added 10 rebounds.
Papi Sarr had 26 points and a season-high 22 rebounds for Adamson, which remained winless in six games.
