Former Maroons star Ronnie Magsanoc gives a thumbs-up on Bo Perasol's appointment.

THEY never got to play together in college, but the starting point guard of the first and only University of the Philippines team to win a UAAP men’s basketball championship is giving Bo Peralso a two thumbs up as the new coach of the Fighting Maroons.

Ronnie Magsanoc said he’s all-out in supporting the appointment of Perasol as the man at the helm of the Diliman-based school. The former PBA mentor took over the coaching reins from Rensy Bajar in another coaching switch which the state university announced on Monday.

“I support coach Bo. I’m happy for him,” said Magsanoc shortly after the 86-70 victory of Meralco over Alaska in Game Four of their PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals. The former UP Maroon stalwart serves as deputy of coach Norman Black at the Bolts.

“I know he’ll do better with the team.”

Magsanoc was the star guard of the Maroons team that made history in 1986 when it won its first and only varsity title under Joe Lipa by beating Jerry Codinera and the University of the East. He had Benjie Paras, Eric Altamirano, Joey Guanio, Dwayne Salvatierra, Joey Mendoza, among others.

He coached the San Beda Red Lions to an NCAA men’s championship in 2012. Magsanoc played as a junior with the Mendiola-based squad.

Asked if he’s interested in helping Perasol with the Maroons, Magsanoc, who suited up for UP from 1983 to 1987, said he’s focused on his job with the Bolts at the moment.

“Dito na lang muna tayo,” he said.
