RENZO Navarro played for San Sebastian in a preseason game on Sunday, serving as confirmation that he has returned to the Stags camp after a one-year stint with De La Salle in the UAAP.
Navarro saw action for the Stags in Sunday’s Fr. Martin Cup tournament at the San Beda gym, finishing with an impressive stats line of 26 points and six assists in a loss to Jose Rizal University-A.
The former Batang Gilas cager later confirmed to SPIN.ph that he has moved to the Stags after formally informing the La Salle coaching staff led by Aldin Ayo and team paron Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojuangco through a letter last week.
“Nagpapasalamat ako sa La Salle and kay Boss Danding. I’m very grateful for the opportunity given to me by the La Salle community,” said Navarro.
Navarro played for Batang Gilas in the 2014 Fiba Under-17 Championship in Dubai following his impressive stint with the Staglets, gaining interest from the Green Archers in the process.
His transfer, however, will require Navarro to sit out for one year - a time he plans to use staying busy in the minor leagues before becoming eligible to play for the Stags in the NCAA.
The 18-year-old Navarro said he has no regrets with his decision to play for La Salle, saying it has always been a dream to be a Green Archer.
“Pangarap ko rin talaga maglaro sa La Salle dahil naglaro ‘yung father ko sa La Salle Greenhills dati. At least, nasabi ko sa sarili ko na tinry ko,” said the son of former PBA player Nandy.
Navarro said he hopes to help the Stags become a title contender again and try to follow in the footsteps of his father, who was part of the San Sebastian team that won the 1985 crown,.
He also bared plans to jumpstart a scholarship program for underprivileged kids with good scholastic records who also have dreams of playing varsity ball.
“Na-achieve ko ‘yung dream ko, gusto ko naman tumulong na ma-achieve din ng iba ‘yung dreams nila,” said Navarro.
