FAR Eastern University pulled out all the stops in the endgame to deal Adamson its first loss in the UAAP Season 81, 88-85, in an overtime thriller on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Tamaraws blew a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter but had enough poise to hold on in the extra period as they improved to 4-2 while putting an end to the Falcons' six-game win streak to start the season.
A crazy sequence in the endgame saw both teams play hot potato with the ball, before it eventually landed in the hands of Hubert Cani who found a leaking Barkley Ebona to give the Tamaraws an 88-85 lead.
Wendell Comboy then made perhaps the biggest play of the night as he swatted away a Sean Manganti three-point try that could've sent the game to a second overtime.
“Yun yung ine-emphasize ni coach Olsen, yung tatlong words - sustain sustain sustain,” said FEU assistant Eric Gonzalez, who appeared in the post-match press conference as Racela hurriedly left to catch Ginebra's game against Meralco in the PBA.
"Si coach Olsen he just kept on encouraging the players even after losing the big lead."
Arvin Tolentino led the way for the Tamaraws with 19 points and four rebounds before getting ejected with 3:43 remaining for what looked like a clothesline foul on Manganti.
His teammates, however, picked the slack as Cani finished with 14 while Comboy added 13 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Ebona and Richard Escoto finished with nine and eight respectively, making critical baskets in the endgame in Tolentino's absence.
Jerrick Ahanmisi finished with 21 points as Sean Manganti added 20 for the Falcons, who trailed trailed, 69-52, at one point before threatening in the endgame.
