FAR Eastern University returned to winning ways after beating slumping University of the East, 67-59, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 79 seniors basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Tamaraws grabbed their second win in four outings to tie Ateneo and University of Santo Tomas for fourth place in the standings while dealing the Red Warriors a third consecutive defeat.
Monbert Arong had 16 points while Axel Inigo added 12 points for the Tamaraws. Raymar Jose was a monster off the boards, hauling down 22 rebounds aside from his 11 points.
“I think it’s a test of character for us because losing to Ateneo was tough for us. I was looking at how we will be able to bounce back after a loss,” said FEU coach Nash Racela.
The Tamaraws went up by 10 points at halftime, 42-32, behind the combined 18 points of Arong and Inigo, but the Red Warriors rallied to pull within three points in the fourth, 62-59, on a triple by Clark Derige.
However, a disqualifying foul slapped on Will Bartolome for elbowing Ron Dennison twice in the rebound play after Derige's basket killed the Red Warriors' momentum.
Mark Olayon had 12 points and six rebounds for the Red Warriors.
