Father's Day special: Jeric and Jeron Teng strive to emulate dad Alvin's longevity and hardwork

The Teng brothers look up to dad Alvin as a source of inspiration.

ALVIN Teng never enjoyed star status during his PBA playing career, but it was his staying power that serves as an inspiration for sons Jeric and Jeron as they chart their own basketball careers.

“Siya ‘yung naging guide namin throughout our career,” said Jeric, the elder of the two playing Teng brothers.

“Siya talaga ang reason kung bakit nagba-basketball ako ngayon,” added Jeron of his father.

Just like most sons of former cagers, Jeric and Jeron said their father was the reason why they took up the sport and try to excel on it.

“Naalala ko na nakakanood ako ng games niya,” recalled Jeric about his father, known for his defensive prowess during his playing years mostly spent with San Miguel Beer. “Doon ko nakuha ‘yung pagka-hilig niya. Noong nakita na niya na naglalaro na ako lagi, tinuturuan na niya ako.”

“Actually, brother ko ‘yung influence ko kung bakit ako nakapasok sa varsity pero ‘yung dad ko, noong nalaman niya na nasa basketball team ako, doon na niya ako tinuruan,” Jeron added.

Alvin, known as `Robocop’ during his long pro career, has been a regular fixture in games of both Jeric and Jeron.

He even tried to be neutral in the times the two played against each other in the UAAP back when Jeron saw action for La Salle and Jeric suited up for University of Santo Tomas.

But he admitted going through some tough time together with his family when Jeric and Jeron battled each other out for the 2013 UAAP men’s basketball crown.

Jeron and the Green Archers won the title in the deciding Game Three.

Having played his final year with UST, Jeric decided to turn pro and is now part of the Rain or Shine team in the PBA.

As a pro, Jeric said his father continues to give him pointers especially on how to stay in the league.

“I’m very fortunate na meron akong dad na pinagdaanan na ‘yung pinag-dadaanan ko ngayon. Malaking tulong talaga siya,” said Jeric.

For his part, Jeron said hard work was the reason his father managed to stay in the PBA for a long time. And that has been an inspiration for him as the face of the Green Archers today.

“Siya ang reason kung bakit nagba-basketball ako ngayon. Na-inspire ako doon sa basketball career niya and ‘yung mga lessons na binigay niya sa amin. Hindi nga siya ‘yung sobrang galing, pero matagal siya sa PBA dahil sa hardwork niya, ‘yung mga ganung bagay,” said Jeron.

Jeric admitted his relationship with his father was never perfect, but Alvin remains there for him and his younger brother.

“Wala akong masabi sa kanya, sobrang bait and understanding. Kahit minsan nag-aaway kami, understanding siya and very supportive,” said Jeric.

“Siya ang nagbigay sa amin ng advices kung paano ako mag-iimprove, yung mga down moments ko nandoon siya to comfort me at kung paano ako maging more motivated,” Jeron said.
