KENNETH Duremdes will take over as head coach of Adamson replacing Leo Austria, who decided not to renew his contract with the Falcons.

Team manager Gilbert Cruz confirmed the choice of the former PBA Most Valuable Player as the Falcons' new head coach to take over from Austria, who formally expressed his intention not to return to the Falcons bench earlier this week.

“He (Austria) wants to take a rest and give Adamson a free hand in selecting a new coach,” said Cruz of Austria, who is also coach of San Miguel Beer in the ABL and an assistant coach at PBA ballclub Petron.

Cruz said that selecting Duremdes as the team’s new coach was an easy decision considering he is one of the greats in Philippine basketball and played for the Falcons in the early 1990s.

“He is one of the most decorated players at Adamson,” said Cruz.

Duremdes, who was one of Austria’s deputies at Adamson this season, was part of the last Falcons team that reached the Finals in 1992 along with giants Marlou Aquino, Edward Joseph Feihl, Giovanni Pineda, and Gerry Hipolito. They were swept in two games by the FEU Tamaraws bannered by the great Johnny Abarrientos

The Marbel, South Cotabato native went on to play in the pro league, where he won the MVP award with Alaska in 1998 and was named one of the PBA's 25 Greatest Players.

Duremdes held the Coke coaching job briefly in the pro league before being named team manager and later assistant coach of the now-defunct Powerade under head coach Bo Perasol.

His appointment is set to be made official in the coming days.

Cruz said that Adamson is still open to Austria returning in any capacity.

“We told him that the door is always open for coach Leo returning to Adamson,” Cruz said.
