NATIONAL University coach Eric Altamirano needed more than an hour to remind his wards against complacency following their second straight defeat after a sizzling start to UAAP Season 79
A calm Altamirano emerged from the dugout after a lengthy huddle following NU’s 51-64 loss to Adamson on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena. He insisted it was only to help his players refocus and not put too much weight on their close loss to undefeated La Salle last Sunday.
“We have to learn from this game I just reminded them that halos lahat you cannot overlook any team in this season,” he said.
“We have to grind it out. We really have to come out every game. We cannot be contented saying na, ‘Oh, you played well against La Salle’ so you think you’re already a contender, you’re only good as your last game,” added Altamirano.
After an Alfred Aroga basket that put NU within two, 51-53, at the 2:19 mark in the regulation, the Bulldogs were held scoreless the rest of the way as Adamson cruised to the win.
From a 2-0 start, the Bulldogs absorbed back-to-back losses for a four-way logjam with University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo and Far Eastern University at the third spot.
“This is a good learning lesson for us na we have to be ready to play and really give out an all-out effort in every game,” said Altamirano. “Wala kang itutulak dito na team eh. Halos lahat ng teams can surprise any team.”
