WHILE most of Cebu’s top prospects have already made their decision as to where they would be playing college or high school basketball in the UAAP or the NCAA, one prominent name has kept mum — Isaiah Blanco.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell yet, it should in due time. A talented 6-foot-3 left-handed point guard, Blanco is actually the son of Cebuano hoops legend and former PBA and Gilas Pilipinas stalwart Dondon Hontiveros.

Blanco, who played for the high school squad of his father’s alma mater, the University of Cebu in 2018, is considered one of the most coveted prospects coming out of high school in the country's basketball hotbed.

Blanco shared that he and the rest of his family, are carefully weighing their options, and they might be coming up with their decision very soon.

Blanco said they are choosing among the likes of FEU, the University of Santo Tomas, De La Salle and Ateneo.

After helping the Junior Webmasters claim the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) championship that season, Blanco committed to join Far Eastern University and actually trained and played for the Tamaraws in preseason tournaments.

However, Blanco had a change of heart and decided to return to UC, explaining that he felt that he still needed to grow as a leader and prove himself more in Cebu.

    It was a decision that proved to be the right one as the youngster led UC back to the finals. Although the Junior Webmasters failed to get the job done this time around, losing to Ateneo de Cebu, Blanco still ended up having a spectacular season and earned Mythical Five honors in both the All Star game and the Cesafi tournament.

    In addition, he was also named the top high school player in the NBTC Cebu rankings and was invited to the national high school all-star game before it was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
