LA Salle’s Ben Mbala has mixed emotions in his return to Cebu but Southwestern University can expect no love, at least on the hardcourt, from its former star player.

“I feel kinda sorry that I’m not going there to be a nice guy against them. I’m going to play basketball. I’m going to play basketball. As much as I can, I’ll do my best for the team,” said Mbala, who joined La Salle after a memorable career with the SWU Cobras.

Ironically, the Green Archers and the Cobras cross paths at the start of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Elite Eight on Thursday at the Cebu City Coliseum.

La Salle moved closer to retaining the PCCL title by ruling the Luzon-Metro Manila qualifiers. The route to the title will go through Cesafi side Southwestern University, a team they faced in the championship game last year.

Mbala had anticipated a return to Cebu for the Elite Eight, but he didn’t expect an early clash with his former team.

“I’m expecting that but I didn’t know that our first game is against Southwestern,” Mbala said.

It was at SWU where Mbala started playing in the Philippines, making waves when the Cobras made the PCCL Final Four in 2012. Following his impressive play against Manila teams, Mbala was recruited by La Salle where he is set to complete his two-year residency.

An interesting match in paint is expected in the DLSU-SWU match, with Mbala battling fellow Cameroonian Landry Sanjo.
