NATIONAL University hopes to use its disappointing Final Four loss to University of Santo Tomas as springboard for a big comeback in next year’s UAAP men’s basketball tournament.
Coach Eric Altamirano said the Bulldogs accomplished their goal this season by reaching the Final Four. Unfortunately, their first post-season appearance in a decade was abruptly cut short when they suffered a 57-63 loss to to the Tigers on Saturday.
“This was our goal from the very start, to get into the Final Four,” admitted Altamirano after the game. “It was a hard climb, at least we were able to achieve the goal.”
The Bulldogs finished the regular season with as the No. 3 seeded team with a 9-5 win-loss slate. They made the Final Four by winning five of their seven games in the second round.
“I know we failed today (Saturday), but we will use this as a motivation for next year to get to the finals,” said Altamirano.
The Bulldogs came to within two points of the Tigers, 57-59, approaching the final two-minute mark, but failed to respond when the game was on the line.
“Again, our immaturity showed in the last two minutes. I felt that we should have been composed. We forced our shots in the end.
“But again, that’s part of our learning, that’s what I told the boys, we learn from our mistakes and we look forward to next year,” said Altamirano.
